Little Red Riding HoodDark and mysterious trees loom over a beaten and dirty cobblestone path. The only light that can be seen is the pale luminance of the moon dancing through the clouds. In the distance the faint clopping of a horse can be heard, followed by the slow dissonance of rusted wheels heaving forth a carriage. Inside sits a sallow-looking man dressed in a black and gold doublet; a lantern hanging over the carriage door sways back forth steadily and dimly reflects it's orange light off the man's tired face. He shifts his gaze to the lower left corner of his doublet where a burnished gold zipper marks the entrance of a pocket. He slides open the pocket and reaches his frail fingers inside to retrieve a rounded pair of specs and an envelope. The specs are placed neatly on his nose and he proceeds to unravel the paper casing to discover a note lying inside. He places the envelope off to the side and unfolds the letter. It reads:
I'm sorry to have contacted you on such sho
a dangerous hallucinationThe light coming through the window was bright,
much too bright.
Even though my eyes were closed
I could see it-
The skin of my arms prickled,
sweat dripped from my brow.
It was two in the afternoon but…
the sun was setting
through the window facing east.
I should have seen the hutch,
shelves lined with bone china
decorated with delicate leaves and vines.
I was so thirsty
and reaching for cups that should have been there.
Instead I found a billboard of butterflies,
the colors raging
more than any rainbow
I'd ever seen.
Their wings fluttered and flashed
yet somehow they moved in slow motion.
I wanted to stand,
wanted to reach out and touch them but…
I couldn't move,
and yet I laughed
ignoring my dry mouth
and the tingling in my feet.
There was a tempest
on the rise
and in my blood.
A sugar rush disguised
as a riot of butterflies
and they were swarming me.
There was a small vial
of insulin in my pocket
that I nev
